Life Without WoW
0I don’t think it is any secret that I had been playing World of Warcraft since the beta was released during the Summer of 2005. I played recreationally and hardcore during that span of 4 years and most of it was fun. But it took its tolls. But I’m proud and happy to say I’ve been WoW free for about 3 months now. It was a tough addiction to break. Nothing like a little too much kiddie drama in the game to just suck the life out of it.
One thing that has helped me is my discovery of Wii Homebrew. I’ve been able to softmod my Wii to do some pretty cool stuff and that has occupied my time. It has made my Wii fun again. I just finished Metroid 3 and sometime this week I’ll probably start Zelda: the Twilight Princess. I also checked out EA Active which is like Wii Fit on steroids. And, you don’t need the balance board at all, although it does make things more interesting in some cases. The new Punch Out is also very cool. Lot’s of similarities to the original yet different enough to be lots of fun. I want to pick up the Wii Motion+ add-on to really make the game play tight.
I’ve also been spending more time outside and have been going out on just about every dog walk and bike ride which is a drastic change. The yard is looking a bit better but still needs some improvement. Admittedly, sometimes I do get bored and struggle to find something to do, but this is a nice change of pace from the gotta-have-the-crack mentality of WoW. I even took a short nap tonight!
Wolfenstein 3D and Quake for the Wii
0Over at the Wiibrew forums there is word that Mr Peanut has released an updated version of his Wolfenstein Port for the Wii. Wolfenstein is credited with popularizing FPS games. I played it on my first computer back in the day.
The game that really got me into PC game, however, is Quake. I would stay up until 3a.m. in my parents’ basement playing with my clan in matches and in practice. I think I was 16 or 17 at the time. Anyways, Izhido has released Q1Rev, a port of Quake to the Wii. Once I get the Homebrew Channel up and running on my 4.0 Wii I think this will be some good fun.
